SWMU 8, Andrew Lake Landfill and Shoreline

SWMU 8, the Andrew Lake Landfill and Shoreline, includes an inactive landfill near the causeway between Andrew Bay and Andrew Lake. The site covers approximately 25 acres. The seaward side of the causeway is included as part of the site because ordnance materials have been historically discovered along the shoreline. Consequently, the seaward side of the causeway is posted with signs and designated by the EOD as a restricted area. Additional warning signs are posted and a gate has been installed on Andrew Road south and east of the landfill. SWMU 8 was historically used for anti-aircraft and coastal artillery batteries and was used for open detonation and land filling of ordnance until the early 1960s. It is assumed that all 25 acres have been impacted by historic activities therefore the entire SWMU remains under restricted access.
